Modem Vm Max Will A Different Modem Connect To The Internet?

Will a different modem connect to the internet? - modem vm max

I have a laptop and a PC, but the wireless laptop is really bad, so I tried connecting the modem to the laptop. It is relatively far (we have with Virgin Media), updated in November, but is too big for the slot / port (sorry for my lack of technical Nouse) and at least 2 other modems that were used before the upgrade. Can I get a box to the VM and use it?
